I got my Kindle Fire last week. I plan to keep my older keyboard Kindle for reading books - eInk and ePaper are still the best way to read eBooks. The main reason I bought the Fire was for viewing movies. I have an Amazon Prime subscription which allows me to stream certain movies and TV shows, but I couldn't help wondering if adding Netflix streaming movies to the mix would be worth the extra $7.99/month. Since Netflix offers a 1-month free trial, I figured what the hay, might as well try it, I've got nothing to lose.
The first thing I did was download the free Netflix app from the Amazon Appstore. I then signed up for a Netflix account. The signup process was very easy, and I was surprised that during the signup, they tell you explicitly how to cancel your membership if you decide that the service isn't for you. It can be done online (no arguing with someone on the phone), and they tell you exactly how to go about it.
Immediately after signing up, I loaded the Netflix app on my Kindle and logged in to the account that I just created. I found a couple of movies that interested me and added them to my Instant Queue. I tapped on the movie that I wanted to watch first, and a box popped up with a description of the film and an image of the movie's package with a "play" button in the middle. I tapped the "play" button, and voila! Instant streaming video! Excellent quality video, I might add, with no hesitating or obvious buffering during the playback.
Now the question became, do I need Netflix, or is Amazon Prime Instant Video enough? I checked several titles, including the two that I selected first, and it appears that there are a lot of titles that Amazon either doesn't have, or they're not free with Amazon Prime. I Spy (the Eddie Murphy/Owen Wilson version) is free at Amazon Prime, but Amazon doesn't even offer Diary of a Nymphomaniac. I found a number of titles (especially foreign films) that Netflix offers but Amazon Prime doesn't.
Also, with Amazon Prime you have to pay $79.00 up front, where with Netflix you only have to shell out $7.99 at a time. That's pretty cheap when you consider that you can watch their movies and TV shows all day, every day if you want.
I think I'm probably going to keep Netflix, but if I change my mind I can easily cancel on December 20 (I marked my calendar so I won't forget). Give it a try! You've got nothing to lose!
